Judiciary staff warned against graft

Dar es Salaam. The minister for Constitutional Affairs and Justice, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe, yesterday issued a stern warning against judiciary staff and state attorneys who take bribes that their days were numbered.

Dr Mwakyembe issued the warning when he toured the office of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), saying the long hand of justice would not spare such workers in the current administration.

“It is no longer a secret that some judges, magistrates, state attorneys and court clerks are accused by public for their tendency to solicit and take bribes. As such they fail to properly administer justice. If you are one of them you should change or leave because we’ll catch you soon,” he warned.

Dr Mwakyembe said that President John Magufuli was expecting to see reform taking place in all offices under the Justice ministry, which are supposed to spearhead fight against graft in the country.

He said: “The government is aware of how risk and difficult your work is. We know some of you have received threats after having made rulings. Keep doing your job. We’ll do ours. But, if you take bribes, know that you are not the only one whose image is turnished but that of the entire judiciary,” he said. He said even though there were many players in the administration of justice, including the DDP’s office, police and Attorney General, it was important for each official to fulfil his duties efficiently for timely justice administration. Dr Mwakyembe also hinted that the government was finalising arrangements that would enable establishment of a special court to deal with corruption and will soon issue a statement to that effect.

“Establishment of this court comes with financial implications, but no matter what it would be established,” he said.

DPP Biswalo Mganga said last year between September and December his office managed to secure judgments for 8 drug cases whereby the suspects were imprisoned for 20 and 25 years.

He added that last October his office was destroyed 260 kilogramme of heroin and cocaine and called upon the public to continue giving them cooperation.
